So yesterday God was trying to tell us something. In the morning, I took the General to the doctor. The parking lot at the doctor’s office is a tight squeeze, so I made sure to park near the back where there weren’t many cars so I could easily get Dimitri in and out of the car. On the way out, I noticed that a big big Texas-style SUV was parked uncomfortably close to me. I silently...
Daily dose of Dimitri: Saying good morning to the animals on his swing.
(Side note: Is there any doubt that this kid is going to be a big talker? I think it’s definitely in the cards!)
One man even said he and his girlfriend argue over whether to argue.
– Yeah, I’ve had a fight about that too. Is that a problem or something? (from this article)
Conversations on The Bachelorette
Me: Do you think there’s any chance that Ali will pick Chris next week?
Dimitri: No way. Are you kidding?
Me: Yeah, you’re probably right. Roberto has it in the bag.
Dimitri: Yeah, it’s going to be pretty boring. I may just sleep through it.
Me: Oh please. You know we’ll be watching.
Dimitri: Geez Mom, don’t...

Last night, after I finished running my errands (note: it is so much easier to run in and out of stores when you aren’t carrying a 15-pound baby in a car seat!), I dragged the boys to La Madeline, and then we got cozy on the couch to watch A Single Man.
This is the Tom Ford movie starring the gorgeous cast of Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, and Matthew Goode. When reading the reviews of this...
Under the Boardwalk
Booth got home early on Friday, and we decided to take the General to the Kemah Boardwalk. It was our first time visiting the little boardwalk overlooking the Galveston Bay. We’ve long wanted to cross it off our “Things to Do in Houston List,” and having a kid motivates you to do such things.
We enjoyed strolling around the place and being near the water. Plus, there was a...

So I’m not that great of a cook (yet!), but I have discovered as a SAHM that the absolute best background noise is the Food Network. There’s something so calming and centering about watching amiable, relaxed chefs slice and dice onions and celery and tell you about their friends Greg and Janice who are stopping by for hors d’oeuvres later that evening. I would like to be...

So I just finished watching Bethenny Getting Married and all I could think was, “Why is Buster Bluth from Arrested Development planning Bethenny’s wedding?”

An ode to brunch
A baby hasn’t changed our social lives that much - we’d already turned into home bodies in our old age, and sometimes a baby is a great excuse to stay home and make it a Blockbuster night.
But I do sometimes miss meeting friends for drinks at a bar. We’ve taken Dimitri to a bar during the day in World Cup season, but I don’t want to be that person with a baby in a bar...
Boy on the Run
My husband started walking at 8 months; I preferred to be carried around until I was 14 months old, when I stood up and walked masterfully for the first time. This describes our personalities perfectly: Booth careens around like he’s got a firecracker in his pants; I tread very delicately and deliberately (it’s better this way - I’m a total klutz).
Dimitri, almost certainly,...
What a difference 2 months makes
When Dimitri was born, we all thought he was “the most beautiful baby ever.” It may have been because he was our first son, the first grandson, and the potent surge of hormones swirling around our hospital room.
Looking back, he was a precious boy. A little frog-like or monkey-like from certain angles, but beautiful nonetheless. But the last 2 months have been kind to him, and...
Why our AC bill is $400 this month
I don’t know if you know this, but Houston in the summer is pretty intolerable. It’s the heat, the mosquitoes, the gray concrete which gathers up the heat and likes to throw it in your face, and the heat, heat, and heat.
(There are only a few things which counter this. Like our citrus grove and herb garden. And watermelon. I think that’s all.)
Dimitri, in his short life,...

To Grandmother's House We Go
This weekend we went to Dallas for my family reunion. We also went to placate my mother who has returned from a European cruise and was in baby withdrawal after a month of not seeing Dimitri.
She and my dad brought back Dimitri a huge bag of riches. There was a wooden crocodile that moves like a caterpillar and will delight the General when he’s older. There was a balsa wood balloon...
Things Dimitri loves right now: His reflection. I can’t blame him because I like to stare at him all day too.
Dimitri is trying to talk to us. Eventually he will learn the English language, but right now he’s speaking mostly in tongue.
The General hopes you and yours had a happy 4th
Happy Independence Day from my favorite little firecracker!
The General had a happy first 4th of July. He went to his first rooftop party in Midtown Houston (he’s much more happening than I was as a young child). It was a breezy evening, and we mingled among some of the city’s pretty people. Booth commented afterwards that babies really are chick magnets. Especially very very...
Today Tropical Storm Alex hit Houston and submerged us in water. To be on the safe side, we canceled our dinner plans and spent the evening holed up, movie-watching and playing Scrabble. Dimitri even joined us for a hand.
I’d like to record for posterity that I kicked Booth’s ass 272, to 262. That is all.
Dimitri had his two-month doctor’s visit today, and everything looks perfect! He’s now 22 3/4 inches long and weighs 12 pounds. This is the 75-90th percentile in weight, some evidence that he inherited his father’s appetite. (And also his mother’s - the kid is doomed). He endured the shots like a champ and just looked very surprised, like, “Nurse, why do...
FDA Warns on Antibiotics in Farm Animals →
I have often thought about needing to eat organically, but, for reasons of convenience, habit, and lack of time, haven’t really gotten around to it. I was reminded of the need when I ran across this article earlier this week. If the FDA is concerned about the use of antibiotics in chickens and cattle, then I sure as hell should be too!
So as a responsible new SAHM, I went to Costco...
